ÖRESUND

A strait unites as much as it separates. One can cross it, but one can also travel along it. One can use it as a bridge or a barrier; as a channel or an obstacle. And all of these actions can happen in both directions. A strait is something that cannot be appropriated. That’s why it serves as a limit and a medium for local repartitions that in the end never hold, whereas the strait continues its ambiguous existence. In this case, it serves as an emblem for the phenomena we encounter in the arts, including their epistemological, political, ethical and ecological implications, and what we study in artistic research.

COLLEGIUM

is a body of colleagues, of “ones chosen with another” (Latin collega). A collegium is born out of a mutual choice and its life and duration are dependent on the commitment and faithfulness of its members to this act. In this case, it consists of people with a common interest in developing themselves as researchers in performing arts and building a research culture, where that kind of research can best be conducted. At the Öresund Collegium, people meet on an equal basis, regardless of their academic or artistic orientation, background or degree. A person belongs to the Collegium if they feel that this is the right kind of context for themselves. The membership is not dependent on the amount of attendance, nor is the success of an event dependent on the number of participants. The goal of the Collegium is to make itself interesting and relevant to its physical and virtual members.

ARTISTIC RESEARCH

Öresund Collegium adopts an idea of artistic research that is simultaneously liberal and focused. On the one hand, artistic research may mean any kind of research conducted in an art academy, as related to its subject area, in this case the performing arts. On the other hand, the work of the Collegium is based on focused reflection on artistic phenomena and problems. The focused nature of the work stems partly from those phenomena or problems themselves, from their originality and/or the topicality, and partly from the way we study them: in each case, the collegium welcomes experts from different areas for a patient and long-term dialogue on the shared topic, leading to collective outcomes.
