Bachelor’s Programme in Dramatic Writing
Writing for the theatre means collaborating with other artists. The Dramatic Writing Programme at Malmö Theatre Academy focuses on the contact between dramatic writing and the actor’s working process. The school has the advantage of having a well-established acting programme under the same roof.
The students’ own writing is in focus and is monitored through frequent meetings with a supervisor. During the programme, workshops are conducted where students get their texts performed by professional actors and receive feedback on their effectiveness on stage and their playability. Throughout the programme courses are offered on text, action and communication, as well as readings and discussions of older and more modern dramatic texts. The students visit role and stage productions and can discuss their impressions with their lecturers.
There are also opportunities for students to conduct their own collaborative projects with the acting students or students from the other two artistic schools at Lund University: Malmö Academy of Music and Malmö Art Academy.
Throughout the programme, various opportunities are given to interact with theatre life in Sweden and abroad. The programme also includes seminars in connection with the research on fundamental dramaturgical issues that is conducted at Malmö Theatre Academy.
Students will write short texts with an emphasis on playability and study the actor's work process in stage performance teaching. Students also have opportunities to examine how the text works "on the floor" under the guidance of one of the school's stage performance teachers. At least two workshops will take place, at which professional actors will take on students' texts.
Later in the programme there will be focus on playability is maintained in a similar format to the first year, but now with a higher level of difficulty and longer texts. Opportunities are given to expand contact with theatres and publishers.
In their final year students work on a final production, which consists of a long dramatic text with a focus on being performed at a professional theatre. The work is carried out under the supervision of an experienced performance dramaturge.
Admission takes place every second year.
