Honorary Doctor Milo Rau
Over the past ten years, Swiss director Milo Rau has made a name for himself as one of the most influential and provocative theatre and film directors of our time. His work has been performed at several important international performing arts festivals such as the Theatertreffen in Berlin and the Festival d’Avignon. Rau has been awarded many theatre prizes, among others, the Peter Weiss Prize (2017) and the World Theatre Day ITI Prize (2016).
Through his re-enactments of politically decisive events, Rau connects past and present in a way that challenges theatre’s “pseudo-authentic joy” of being there. Instead, Rau wishes to stimulate the ability for a historical and angled perspective in order to investigate truth claims in both art and politics. His work includes the much talked about Breivik’s Statement, The Congo Tribunal and The Last Days of the Ceausescus, and Rau himself describes his artistic approach as “global realism”.
Rau’s art is not limited to directing, instead, his work involves the development of new methods for social analysis, public interactivity and the actor’s work. As an author and global speaker, he analyses theatre through, among other things, sociology and cultural theory. In his role as artistic director of NTGent in Belgium he has created a manifesto that questions the role of institutions in the performing arts of the future and emphasises collaborative work and the inclusion of new voices in theatre as a possible alternative. Rau’s artistic and educational work ties in well with how the Malmö Theatre Academy is developing its investigation of a broadened approach to the shaping of narratives in theatre.
A ceremony was held in the Cathedral of Lund on May 24th 2019.
Milo Rau made a public appearance at INKONST in Malmö on May 23rd 2019 in a Talk with Björn Sandmark, CEO of Göteborgs Stadsteater:
