The Malmö Theatre Academy runs a PhD programme in Theatre in Fine Arts and currently has five doctoral students: playwright Annika Nyman, and director John Hanse, both admissioned in 2016; playwright and dramaturge Tanja Diers, costume designer Charlotte Østergaard director and theatre maker Steinunn Knuts Önnudottir, admissioned in 2020.
The emphasis in the doctoral program is on artistic work that is developed through reflection, documentation and in-depth studies in one's own field, as well as studies in other relevant areas of knowledge. The choice of technology, theory and research method of relevance for the project takes place in a discussion between the doctoral student and the supervisor.
The studies aim to give the student the ability to independently and reflectively plan, carry out and document an investigative work, where a well-defined research question and adequate methods form the basis for a significant contribution to the development of knowledge in the field of theatre.
During their education, the doctoral students conduct various artistic projects, that often includes external collaborators. They also participate in seminars, festivals and conferences, and present their research both nationally and internationally.
The participation of doctoral students in the institution’s broad activities is an essential part of the development of the institution’s collective knowledge environment. In practice, this means that the doctoral student is to take part in the department’s meetings and actively contribute to the knowledge development.

During the first part of the doctoral program, the compulsory courses Artistic Methods 1 and 2, Academic Writing, and Perspectives on Artistic Research are given.
Elective Courses, open also to doctoral students at other universities
In addition to the above-mentioned courses Malmö Theatre Academy conducts elective courses, which are open also to doctoral students at other universities, for example
Etik i konstnärlig praktik (Ethics in artistic practice, 7,5 ects).
The course offers an introduction to specific ethical theories: phenomenology, postcolonial and posthuman perspectives. These philosophical strands of thinking are seen in the context of artistic practice and specifically each doctoral students' projects. The course consists of lectures and discussions, and practical demonstrations. There will be two meetings in the spring, and two in the autumn, the last of which will consist of an oral presentation based on a submitted text (3-5000 words). After the course the doctoral students will be able to formulate an ethical approach to their artistic practice. The course is led by Dr. Camilla Eeg-Tverbakk, Visiting Professor at Malmö Theatre Academy.
