The exhibition and public programme “Systems, Organisms, Symbiosis” reopens again at EIGHT (Polytechniou 8) from 23 September to 22 October 2021. It focuses on active interactions of systems, beings, organisms and narratives as these take place in urban, social and environmental fields. Thinking through notions of mutation, immunity and continuity it explores emergent instituent forms, models of co-existence, fragmented histories and synecologies. “Systems, Organisms, Symbiosis” was initially presented in June 2021 as part of the edition of Instituting of NEW Alphabet School co-organised by HKW Berlin and with the support of Goethe Institut Athen.

In his book Three Ecologies published in 1989 Felix Guattari argues that we are currently undergoing intense techno-scientific transformations and if no remedy is found, the ecological disequilibrium will ultimately threaten the continuation of life on the planet. What seems to be critically at stake according to Guattari is that during these upheavals human modes of life, both individual and collective, are progressively deteriorating and are generally reduced to their meanest expression. Donna Haraway in Staying with the Trouble published in 2016 argues that critters interpenetrate one another, loop around and through one another, eat each another and partially digest and partially assimilate one another and thus establish symbiotic arrangements. She offers the term “sympoiesis” as a word that might reflect complex, dynamic processes and responses to situated and historical systems. This exhibition seeks to both reflect and examine such upheavals and process of “sympoiesis” while at the same time explore interventional potentialities and poetics of artistic processes within and in relation to social, political, personal and ecological dead ends. The spatial co-existence and interaction of artists and works attempts to experiment with the poetics of symbiosis bringing together existing procedures with imaginative practices, the necessity of co-existence and the paradoxes of constant mutations that give rise to new forms of life.
